Skydiving Deaths and Fatalities from Skydive Accidents
Thanks to the media, skydiving is generally viewed as a dangerous sport when, in fact, skydiving has become a very safe activity since the advent of the tandem parachute system. Over the past 10 - 15 years, skydiving fatalities have increased simply due to the growing number of skydivers. Statistically, skydiving is much safer that it was in the 1960s or 1970s. Skydiving accidents and fatalities are generally a result of "pilot error". Gear malfunctions or failures are few and far between. A skydiving death is a big story for the media. Unfortunately, they fail to report on the millions of successful skydives made that did not result in a death or fatality or even injury.
